“I always wanted to plant a garden, but there was never enough water. Now, I know the supply will not fail, and my family has fresh food to eat.”

When our community development team first arrived in a remote mountain village, the elders shared a heavy burden that had weighed on their families for generations: every dry season brought severe water scarcity.
The village relied on a small solar well and an unprotected mountain spring. When the dry heat settled over the hills, the water supply dried up to a trickle. Families were forced to travel to neighboring villages just to bathe, and local government trucks occasionally had to haul in emergency water tanks to keep the community afloat.
Driven by Christ’s call to serve others and practice faithful stewardship of God’s creation, our team began walking alongside village leaders to find a lasting solution.
Protecting the Source: A Season of Abundance
In 2024, the community decided the most vital step was to protect their mountain spring. Demonstrating remarkable teamwork and ownership, local residents gathered during the 2024 rainy season to build a protective roof over the spring pond and construct an earthen wall to prevent dirty storm runoff from contaminating the pool.
In early 2025, they repaired leaking pipes throughout the delivery network to prevent water loss. The true test came during the following dry season—and even when the village’s solar pump unexpectedly failed, the protected spring provided more than enough water for every household every single day. For the first time in the history of the village, the dry season passed without hardship.
By late 2025, something remarkable began to sprout across the community: home vegetable gardens.
For generations, families had been unable to grow their own produce due to dry-season drought. When we asked one mother what inspired her to plant her new garden, she smiled and said, “I have always wanted to grow a garden, but there was never enough water. Now, I am confident the supply will not fail, and I can grow healthy food for my family.”
Uncovering the Truth About Unsafe Water
While securing a reliable water supply was a massive victory, our team and the community soon realized that quantity was only half the battle—water quality was quietly threatening the village’s health.
On one of our team’s earliest visits, a hospitable resident offered us a cup of cool water. It looked crystal clear, but one sip revealed a dangerous reality: the water was far from clean.
The spring water ran across exposed dirt, gathered in an open catchment pond filled with organic matter, and flowed through open tanks before being piped into homes. Because the water appeared clear to the naked eye, the community assumed it was safe to drink. Meanwhile, vulnerable community members—young children, the elderly, and the chronically ill—suffered constantly from severe stomach illnesses. One young girl quietly shared that her mother was sick five days out of every week.
Education, Health, and Lasting Transformation
To address the hidden danger, our team facilitated community health and hygiene workshops, demonstrating how microscopic contamination causes illness. Together with local leaders, we tested the water source, proving that clear water isn’t always clean water.
We introduced simple, sustainable water treatment methods—including boiling, solar disinfection, and biosand filtration systems:
- Awareness & Testing: Community water testing opened eyes to the reality of contamination.
- Widespread Adoption: By mid-year, 25% of households reported regularly boiling their drinking water.
- Household Filtration: Families began installing biosand filtration systems in their homes to purify drinking water daily.
- Restored Health: Chronic waterborne illnesses began to drop, bringing strength and relief back to families across the village.
Where there was once sickness, scarcity, and anxiety during the dry months, God’s grace and community partnership have brought physical health, abundant food, and a bright future for generations to come.
